| Notes |
- RESIDENCE: Castell Gwyn and Tre-wyn (Whitecastle and Wynston). (Bartrum, Welsh Genealogies 300-1400, vol. 7 p. 469)
PROPERTY: Lord of Welsh Castell Gwyn {White Castle or Gwyn's Castle}. (Bradney, History of Monmouthshire, vol. 1 p. 99)
REMARKS: "There is an anecdote about Gwyn ap Gwaithfoed by Thomas Jones of Tregaron in Harleian MS.3538, copied slightly differently in Bag. 126. See also SE 195." (Bartrum, Welsh Genealogies - Additions and Corrections 300-1400, 5th List, p. 25 Gwaithfoed 1 fn. 2)
REMARKS: "In the Llyfr Baglan the story is told of Sir Gwyn ap Gwaethfoed that, being old and blind, one of the Normans had taken his castle. He appealed to the King William Rufus for permission to fight the Frenchman with a sword in a closed chamber. Sir Gwyn killed the Frenchman, and so regained possession of his castle." (Bradney, History of Monmouthshire, vol. 1 p. 99)
(Research) KINSHIP: Investigate> Bartrum's 'Welsh Genealogies 300-1400' volume 6 page 469 states he is either the son of Gwaithfoed, or as volume 10 page 776 states son of Philip ap Hywel ap Rhys ap Tewdwr.
(Research) KINSHIP: Investigate> Bradney's 'History of Monmouthshire' volume 1 page 242 makes him the son of Gwaithfoed and Morfudd ferch Ynyr.
(Research) MARRIAGE-TITLE: Investigate> Bradney's 'History of Monmouthshire' volume 1 page 242 states he was married to Emma daughter of Drew de Baladon, sister to Hamelyn, and widow of Walter the Constable. As Emma was born around 1070 it is unlikely he was married to her. It also states he was knighted by William "the Conqueror". It gives him a son named "Sir Drew de Wynston, Lord of Wynston alias Tre-Wyn" = "Isabel, dau. to Sir William Wallis, knt". This supposed son in turn had a son named "Ivo (or Ievan) de Wynston = Joan, dau. to Howel ap Iorwerth, Lord of Caerlleon".
