- Spent the first six years of his life on the Kagel Farm in Sundown Township which his father farmed until he lost it in the Great Depression. They then moved into Clements where his father, John (Hans], and mother operated a restaurant. That burned to the ground when he was 9. He went to grade school in Clements and then to high school in Wabasso. He participated in all sports. He finished his senior year at Springfield.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre. He was a Master Technical Sergeant in Aviation Ordinance . He served his active duty in the Pacific Theatre , the Solomon Islands, New Hebrides and Guadalcanal . Alos spent 14 months in Hawaii . They were issued WW 1 helmets, which were tossed overboard while they were at sea because they were so uncomfortable .

After they were married they lived in Clements for a short time. In September 1948 they moved to Milroy where they had purchased a grocery store. They operated Kagel's Grocery until 1978 when the sold the business to George Lanoue.
In January 1979 John and Maureen went ot work in Redwood Falls, for the Zytec Corp.,formerly Control Da ta ( this was a factory where Computer power supplies were manufactured) . They both worked the night shift. John worked until October 1987 , at this time he retired due to heart surgery. Maureen
continued to work until December 1988.
John was actively involved in sports his entire life. He participated in football, basketball and baseball in high school. Following his military service he played catcher for area baseball teams (Wanda, Seaforth, Springfield, Milroy). He was manager of the Milroy baseball team for one year and also served on the baseball board. He also was a faithful fan. He ran the downs marker at the Milroy High school football games, the time clock at the basketball games and umpired the baseball games. He also umpired for area softball games.
