  The confiscated Arundel Castle, taken from Hugh de Albini, Earl of Arundel by Henry III, was given to John and he thus became the 5th Earl of Arundel. He was afterward made, according to Burke, "captain-general of all the forces designed for guarding the Welsh marches, and in the baronial war, he appears to have sided with the barons, and soon afterwards with the king." KINSHIP: Son and heir by 1st wife. BIRTH: Born after 1222/1223, when his cousin Robert de TATESHALL was the eldest born of the heirs of Hugh, Earl of Arundel. MILITARY: Battles and Wars> Took part in the Welsh war 1258. MILITARY: Prisoner of War> Taken prisoner, along with the King, at the battle of Lewes in 1264. TITLES: Awarded by writ in 1243 (in right of his deceased mother) the Castle and Honour of Arundel, whereby (according to the admission of 1433) he must be regarded as (de jure) Earl of Arundel, however, he never seems to have been known by that title either in his lifetime or afterwards.
