      REMARKS: Some sources refer to him as King of Glamorgan. The term King can be misleading. In Wales till the middle of the 12th century individuals were styled 'Brenin' meaning chief or high one, and 'Arglwydd' meaning lord or master.
      REMARKS: He was a wise and valorous Prince, ever fortunate and victorious in his undertakings. (Dwnn, Heraldic Visitations of Wales, vol. 2 p. 107 fn. 8)
      REMARKS: He "was married several times, two of his wives being his first cousins, and hence, according to the Church (although not to Welsh law) within the prohibited degree. The question of Owen's last marriage to Crisant [Cristin ferch Gronwy], the mother of Dafydd, who slew Hywel and succeeded to the throne, came up in Owen's lifetime, and refusing to put Crisant away, he was excommunicated by Thomas á Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, dying under that ban. After Owen's death, in 1167, the children by Seinioes (or Pyvod) [Ffynnod "Wyddeles"], Hywel's mother, and by Crisant, David's mother, were declared illegitimate by the clergy by instructions, of course, from Canterbury. The eldest son of Owen, Iorwerth, was for some reeason passed over by the Welsh; but as he had married a Norman woman, we suspect that the ruling from Canterbury was inspired by the aspirations of the English crown."
