- BIRTH: Before 1197.
RESIDENCE: Breconshire.Tresswell, Visitation of Shropshire, vol. 29 p. 304)
PROPERTY: Lord of Brecknock {Brecon}. (J-Morris, Shropshire Genealogies, vol. 6 p. 2943)
PROPERTY: 8th Lord of Abergavenny. (Bradney, History of Monmouthshire, vol. 1 p. 147)
DEATH: Hanged by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth for an alleged affair with his wife Joan.
REMARKS: He remained loyal to his sovereign, and opposed Llywelyn "Mawr". (Bradney, History of Monmouthshire, vol. 1 p. 147)
REMARKS: "He was discovered in Joan's chambers, accused of being her lover, and promptly and publicly hanged. While the story that William and Joan were lovers has been generally accepted the 'Annals of Margam' implies that the "intimacy" was dedevised by Llywelyn to avenge himself on William for political injuires inflicted not only by William but by the entire Braose family; the execution was hailed by the Welsh as a vindication of a blood-feud against the Braoses dating from at least 1176. Indeed, shortly after the execution Llywelyn wrote to William's widow Eva and to William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, Eva's brother, stating, in effect that so far as he was concerned, the intended marriage between Llywelyn's son Dafydd anand Eva's daughter Isabella could go forward as planned, and that he could not have prevented the Welsh magnates from taking their vengeance." (Reitwiesner, 'Children of Joan, Princess of North Wales', The Genealogist, Spring 1980 vol. 1 no. 1 p. 93 fn. 33)
REMARKS: "In official records called 'Gwilym Junn.' by the Welsh Gwilym Ddû." (Evans, British Genealogist, book 5 p. E53)
REMARKS: "Sir Wm was ransomed from the Welshman in Eyri in 1229, and in the next year being invited to a Banquet by the Prince of Wales, was there slain in an uproar". (Evans, British Genealogist, book 5 p. E53)
(Research) KINSHIP: Conflict/Error> Dwnn's 'Heraldic Visitations of Wales' volume 2 pages 54 and 55 give him a daughter Mawd who was married to Gruffudd ap Rhys, prince of South Wales. This probably Isabella who was married to Dafydd ap Llywelyn, prince of Wales.
