- Served in War of 1812 and Civil War 1861-1865 Per Record of Burial Place of Veteran, Franklin County, PA and on file at the Adjutant General's Office, Harrisburg, PA, John was a veteran of the War of 1812, serving as a private in the Army from 9 Sep 1812 to 31 Jan 1813 in Mercersburg, Co.-Capt Hays Co., Col. Jared Irwins Regt.. John's Declaration for a Pension Under Act of February 14,1871--War of 1812, State of Maryland, County of Washingtonstates that John Hart, aged 77 years, a resident of the town ofMercersburg, in the county of Franklin, in the State of Pennsylvania was married to Rebecca Spangler in Franklin Co., PAon 8-29-1813. John served in the military service of the UnitedStates as a Private in Captain Patrick HHays' company of the Pennsylvania militia volunteers in the war of 1812. He was enrolled on or about the 20th of August 1812, for the period of six months, and was honorably discharged at Black Rock, in the state of New York, on or about the 23rd day of December, 1812. A certification dated Aug 18, 1871, states that John Hart, pension claim N. 7628, was a surviving soldier of the war of 1812, with witnesses listed as L.R. Spangler and George Spangler.
