- At about 9 years of age, John moved from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Owen County, Indiana via wagon and steamboat. The family lived for two or three years in the southern part of Taylor Township near Old Salem Church. About 1855 the family moved to Quincy, Indiana. In the early part of the Civil War, John enlisted in Company D, 59th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. He was wounded at the seige of Vicksburg, but served with his regiment until the end of the war, receiving an honorable discharge. John was a faithful member of Quincy Methodist Church for almost 40 years, serving as chorister in the worship of the church, as trustee in its business interests, and for many years as a Sunday School teacher. John lived in a house across the street from the Methodist Church in Quincy, Indiana. He was the last living Civil War Veteran of Taylor Township.
