  • Notes
    • Stephen is shown in the 1880 census in East Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, age 28, a student. His wife, Alida (Aleida), 27, and daughter Alice (1), as well as Aleida's mother, Catherine Benneket, 66. Alice was born in New Jersey and Catherine was born in Hanover, Germany.

In the 1900 census, Stephen and Aleida were living in Marion Village, Turner County, South Dakota. Stephen is shown as being 49, Alieda is 47. With them are their children, Gertrude H. (22), a school teacher; John S. (actually Stephen John Harmeling), 19, a school teacher; Emma J. (17), Jerry (Gerald) R. (15), Henry (13), Philip (13), Elamdorf (Elmer) (10), Kate A. (8), Bengman (Benjamin) E. (7), Margait (Margaret) (5), and Stephen's mother, Getirstze Brunekant, 86, a widow. Getirestze is shown as having had eight children, of whom here son Stephen is the only one surviving. She was born in Holland.

In the 1910 census, the family is living in Vashon, King County, Washington. Stephen was 59, Aleida was 57 and the children are shown as Gertrude H. (31), a teacher; Emma J. (25), a music teacher; Elmender (20), a laborer in his father's nursery; Kate A. (18), attending school; Edward B. (16), a laborer in the nursery and attending school; Margaret E. (15), attending school.

In the 1920 census, the family is still living in Vashon, Washington, Stephen is 69 and Aleida 68. Still living with them is Edward B. (26), Gertrude Ensing (41), Alice G. Ensing 2 yrs, 10 months, William E. (11) and a boarder, Pamelia P. Jones, 37, of Kansas. Gertrude is apparently married, although it doesn't state her marital status, since her name has changed. Apparently, her husband had died by then or she was divorced. Alice and William are shown as Stephen and Aleida's grandchildren, probably the children of Gertrude.

In the 1930 census, Stephen is 79, Aleida has apparently died, as she isn't present. Gertrude is 51 and Edward B. is 36. They're still living in Vashon at this time.

Stephen was pastor of the Sandham Memorial Reformed Church in Marion Junction, South Dakota in 1889, according to the book "Taking the Jesus Road," by LeRoy Koopman. He later moved to nearby Monroe, South Dakota.

When Stephen and his family were living in Vashon Island, Washington in 1907, Stephen was one of three investors, including J. W. King and T. Hanson, who founded the Vashon Preserving Company, which manufactured fruit preserves. He was elected president of the Western Washington Horticultural Association in February of 1914.
